Young Eagles to Fly!

Young Eagles is an international initiative aimed at providing positive aviation experiences for youth who want to be involved in aviation either as a hobby or as a career. In New Zealand the programme is run by aero clubs under the guidance of their parent body, the Royal New Zealand Aero Club.

The programme includes visits to places like the control tower, rescue fire, maintenance workshops, Warbirds, an aircraft factory, and many other flying related activities.

In addition, regular opportunities to go flying in light aircraft with experienced pilots are part of the programme. “One of the great things about Young Eagles is seeing the mile-wide smile on the faces of young people after they’ve been flying” says Richard Small. “The Young Eagles programme allows us to make the experience available to a wide group of young men and women in a very safe environment”.

Young Eagles also get to focus on flight theory as well as receive information on pathways to becoming a pilot.

Waikato Aero Club offers a popular and well-regarded career path for those wishing to pursue careers as commercial airline pilots. The Club has trained many pilots who’re now working in commercial aviation including several airlines.

When Young Eagles reach the age of 15 they can apply for one of four annual flying scholarships which will get them started on their private pilot licence.

The Young Eagles programme is available to young people aged from 11 to 17.
